Mount Baker Foundation’s funds come from the legacy of Mount Baker Kidney Center (MBKC) which provided high quality outpatient dialysis services to Whatcom County for almost 40 years. The Board of MBKC engaged in an 18-month visioning process to determine what to do with its funds, before identifying the three areas of focus. Mount Baker Foundation was created in December 2017, with its first operational year in 2018. Its first grant was to provide critical dental services for individuals with Chronic Kidney Disease.
Prior to its sale, the Mount Baker Kidney Center named its building the “Lombard & Elston Building,” in honor of its long-time Medical Director, Bill Lombard, M.D., and Nurse Manager, Ethel Elston, R.N.
The legacy of MBKC will live on through Mount Baker Foundation. In drafting its Vision and Mission statement, the Board noted:
" We do this to honor the hopes and contributions of MBKC founders, physicians, staff, patients, families and the community that made this possible."
